Thomasville, GA- Folks in Thomasville got quite a show Saturday morning when dozens of men traded in their sneakers for something a little fancier: red high heels!
"It feels pretty good, because I've been practicing," said participant Rico Walker. "I called my mother and she told me, 'you gotta walk on your toes,' so I got a little strategy to this thing."
It's all part of the third annual "Walk a Mile in Her Shoe"' event.
The money raised will benefit the Treehouse Children's Advocacy Center in Thomas County, which helps victims of sexual and physical abuse.
"The money raised today will help us be able to provide vital services to victims, such as forensic interviews and sexual assault medical exams," said Executive Director of the Treehouse, Jackla Dean.
"There's a lot of sexual assault, more than I actually knew happened, especially locally," said Thomasville firefighter, Cleburn Bannister. "It's something that gets overlooked and I felt like it was a worthy cause to come out and raise money and humiliate myself."
Many of the men wobbled their way through the mile, some ran it, but a few chose to dance their way to the finish line. One of those men, was Dominic Ford, a police officer with the Thomasville Police Department.
"It's natural. It's all about the hip action. You gotta feel it the whole time, gotta become one with the heel," he said.
Many of the participants say, after completing the mile they have a whole new appreciation for women!
"I just give my hats off to you women; it's a challenge. It's definitely a challenge."
"It's painful to look pretty," Bannister added.
Organizers say between money raised by walkers, sponsors, and a raffle, they raised $40,000 for the Treehouse.
