Events at FSU to Commemorate Anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001

Florida State University will commemorate the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with three events on its Tallahassee campus on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

• Memorial American Flag Display: The Thank A Soldier Organization of FSU is sponsoring a daylong memorial display of American flags. The display will take place:

UNIVERSITY WAY/COLLEGIATE LOOP

• “9/11: Day of Remembrance and Service”: The Florida State University College of Law will host this memorial program sponsored by the Tallahassee office of the Holland & Knight law firm and Leon County. The program is affiliated with the I Will 9/11 Day Movement, which encourages people to perform a good deed on Sept. 11. The program will feature a former New York City resident giving a first-hand account of Sept. 11, 2001, and the days that followed; a color guard and bagpipes; recognition of first-responders, veterans and those currently serving in the military; and the announcement of the creation of the Glenn J. Winuk Humanitarian Award, named for a Holland & Knight partner who died in the South Tower of the World Trade Center while selflessly working to save others. The memorial program will take place:

Following the program, a free lunch will be served and the public will be given the opportunity to assemble care packages for local soldiers who are deployed in Afghanistan.

• Lecture: Jonathan Haidt of the New York University Stern School of Business will discuss “The Righteous Mind: How Morality Binds Us Together and Tears Us Apart.” Haidt is the author of “The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion” (Random House, 2012). The lecture is cosponsored by Florida State’s Golden Tribe Lecture Series; the Student Government Association; the Division of Student Affairs; Uphold the Garnet and Gold; the Center for Leadership and Civic Education; and the Village Square. The lecture will take place:

After the lecture, the FSU Spiritual Life Project will give participants an opportunity to pair up and practice “dialogue across differences” in a structured format. Haidt will take part in this activity as well.
