Organizations at Florida A & M University can welcome new members
once again this fall.
Starting September 11, 2012, Greek organizations can begin recruiting members. All other organizations can start six days days later on the 17th.
The University had banned clubs from accepting new members last January after the alleged hazing death of drum major Robert Champion.
The University is also implementing new guidelines for recruitment that include mandatory workshops to address hazing. It's a policy some students say will help.
"Seeing that the University has a zero tolerance for it (hazing), it will definitely be an improvement for organizations seeing the penalties and what it can do to them," says FAMU freshman Quan Ervin.
Other new guidelines include requiring all new members to maintain at least a 2. 0 GPA and complete at least 24 credit hours by the end of their freshman year and for executive board members of clubs and organizations to maintain at least a 2.5 GPA.
By the fall of 2013, the University says students must complete their freshman year with a minimum of 24 credit hours, have a 2.5 GPA and do 30 hours of community service.
