Press Release: FAMU

Florida A&M University (FAMU) today lifted the suspension for the concert choir. FAMU’s Department of Public Safety officially notified the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities on Monday, March 11, 2013 that the alleged hazing incident against the concert choir was unfounded.

The alleged hazing incident was reported on February 14, 2013. The report alleged verbal hazing, isolation and physical hazing occurred within the concert choir.

The choir had been suspended since February 20, 2013.

The university has made sweeping changes to enhance its efforts to promote a zero tolerance for hazing. The university created the position of special assistant to the president for anti-hazing and hired Bryan Smith to track all complaints and ensure the complaints are fully investigated and resolved. The university has also strengthened membership intake processes for clubs and organizations and has increased awareness of anti-hazing policy and initiatives.

Other measures include the creation of two new positions in the Division of Student Affairs - a director of judicial affairs and a coordinator of judicial affairs - to provide additional support and oversight. A new anti-hazing website also serves as a resource for information and an avenue for students to seek help and report hazing.
