Press Release: Florida A&M University

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida A&M University (FAMU) Cooperative Extension Program will sponsor the 4th annual FAMU Farm Fest on June 7-8 at the Research and Extension Center and Farm, located at 4259 Bainbridge Highway in Quincy, Fla.

The primary aim of the FAMU Farm Fest is to promote public awareness of the full scope of the "land-grant concept" in education, which embraces teaching, research and extension (outreach) at FAMU. The FAMU College of Agriculture and Food Sciences (CAFS) supports a multi-billion dollar agriculture and food sciences industry by producing graduates to serve in these global professions. Local farmers, producers, and families in the Big Bend and surrounding counties are invited to attend this event, which will be both educational and entertaining.

Farm Fest 2013 will be a two-day event, which includes a Funding Educational Seminar for small farmers on Friday, June 7, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Informative presentations by representatives from Farm Credit, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the Farm Service Agency and the Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education (SARE) will serve to enhance public awareness of resources and support that is available for small farmers to improve economic profitability for their agricultural enterprise.

On Saturday, June 8, FARM Fest will continue with educational exhibits and presentations on agro-forestry, container gardens, horticulture, livestock, urban markets, and vegetable production. The family-friendly event will offer sessions throughout the day including the displays and product tasting/sampling demonstrations.
