FHP To Motorists: Move Over

By  |

The Florida Highway Patrol is asking drivers on the interstates to 'move over'.

During January, troopers are reminding people of the Move Over Law. If a motorist sees an emergency vehicle on the side of the road, they are required by law to change lanes. If they can't, they must slow down 20 mph below the posted speed limit.

For Captain Nancy Rasmussen, working along the roadways can be scary.

"[There are] cars passing you all within a foot or two knowing that you're out there protecting a motorist that you pulled over or that you stopped for and you have motorists driving by," said Rasmussen. "It's a little nerve-wracking when you're sitting on the side of the road trying to do your job."

Four Florida troopers were involved in crashes in 2012. Since 1999, more than 170 law enforcement officers across the United States have died due to an accident from being on the side of the road.
