Tallahassee, FL-The department of Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles says scammers are using the department's name and email address as part of an online phishing scam to extract people's banking information.

The department says people are receiving a fraudulent email that looks like a receipt of their transactions with the department of Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles

In actuality, the department says the email is part of an online phishing scam used to extract your personal banking information.

The department estimates there may be hundreds of potential victims across the states.

According to the department, these potential victims receive an email with a tracking number and email address that looks like it came from the department. But it did not.

The department says the emails typically come from the email address DONotReply@FLHMSV.Gov and contains a link inside that it asks you to click on.

"Make sure if you get this type of email from "DoNotReply@FLHSMV.GOV and you have not made a recent transaction with the department, make sure you delete it. Don't open it if you haven't opened it yet. If you do, don't click on the links because it could download malware on your computer," said Courtney Heidelberg, a spokeswoman with the department of Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

The department says it's unclear where these alleged scammer got these email addresses from, but the department says its database was not hacked.

Heidelberg says charges against the alleged scammers may be something the department considers down the road.
