Story by James Buechele:
All roads lead to Florida State University. School leaders hope a new hotel and convention center near the campus would do the trick.
"This civic center, convention center and hotel property is probably one of the better ideas that I've heard, come from that committee," said Tallahassee city commissioner Andrew Gillum.
Florida state hopes a new convention center and hotel for the civic center will make downtown a destination for business.
"What are going to be the game changers? What are the ideas that we can invest in create that ends up attracting new businesses."
The university is asking for $20 million from the county sales tax. Plus another $4 million would come from money originally set aside for a performing arts center. This is just a small part of the proposed $260 million dollar project.
The proposed plan actually places it right here in the parking lot of the civic center, and they're hoping to have a parking garage to ease those concerns as well. City leaders say there's been proposals for a civic center that have fell through before in the past, but believe they have the support for it now.
"Something as big as this will probably take FSU to pull it off , said Tallahassee city commissioner Gil Ziffer. "My initial response is very positive, very favorable."
City officials won't even be presented the proposal for at least two more months.
