Local Fraternity Shaves Heads to Support Members Fighting Cancer

Tallahassee, FL - An FSU fraternity is standing behind two of their members who are undergoing cancer treatment. Oliver Bucknell was diagnosed with Stage 3 Melanoma and Adam Jankowski was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lymphoma. Their Theta Chi fraternity brothers started a fundraiser where they are shaving their heads for donations. Carter Mack, a member of Theta Chi says people immediately responded to the idea. He says “"I put a jar in the office and said first person to put one hundred dollars in there can shave my head. Within 20 minutes, there was one hundred dollars in that jar and I was the first person to shave my head."

The response was so overwhelming from both the Greek community and students at Florida State as well as people in Tallahassee that they increased their goal from $10,000 to $25,000. Theta Chi Public Relations Chairman, Billy Capito admits "we thought that we would raise a couple thousand dollars at most but over the course of four days we raised over $5,000 and now we're at $18,000."

Mack has been a friend of Adam's since 8th grade and met Oliver through the fraternity. He says their diagnosis caught everyone by surprise and admits "it's really hard to hear something like that because they have so much more to live for. They are not even through all of their experiences in college. Adam turned 21 about 3 weeks after he was diagnosed."

Bucknell and Janckowski are doing well with their treatments and hope to make it back to school before football season next fall. In the meantime, the fundraising and head shaving continues. Theta Chi member John Robison says "I'm actually going to shave my head again and keep doing it until Adam and Oliver are okay” and according to Capito, "it looks like the entire chapter is going to have to shave their head now. It's just for a good cause and we're all down to do it."

A Theta Chi Alumni will be shaving fraternity members heads and making a large donation to the fundraiser on March 17, 2013.
