Tallahassee, FL - Police responded to an early morning accident after a passerby spotted a car in the woods. But when officers arrived, the woman driving had died.

Tallahassee Police were called to a car crash on West Tharpe Street around 3:20 Friday morning.

OFC David Northway with the Tallahassee Police Department says, "TFD, TPD, and EMS all responded and we did locate a four-door sedan in the wood line. There appears to have just been one person in the car and she is deceased."

The accident happened between San Luis/Devra Drive and Ivan Drive.

Police say they believe 23-year-old Elizabeth Butler was driving westbound on Tharpe before crashing the car in the wooded area on the opposite side of the road.

Officers say it was a passerby driving down Tharpe Street who noticed the car and the woods and called police.

Work crews had to saw some of the trees down to get to Butler's car.

OFC Northway says, "In a case like this, our hearts and thoughts are with the family at this time. These are scenes that we do not like to come to. But, unfortunately they do occur."

It took about five hours before the car could be removed.

A power line was also pulled down from the accident.

Taz Carnes lives across the street from the scene. He says, "I felt terrible. It gave me butterflies in my stomach just thinking about it."

He says his roommate woke him up after the crash. Carnes says, "I saw all the cop cars, like 15 cop cars lined up blocking the whole road off. I knew something bad had happened."

Carnes, and others in the area, say they've seen far too many tragedies on this stretch of Tharpe Street.

Carnes says, "You've got a hill, the light, you've got a curve, dangerous valleys to fall in. I've seen people rear-ended and T-boned at the light many times. I can see people hauling butt around the corners all the time. I feel like they just need to slow it down a little bit and it will be a lot safer place."
