Press Release: Leon County Sheriff's Office
At 9:55 pm on Thursday, May 16, 2013, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office responded to Apalachee Parkway near the intersection of Cap Tram Road in reference to a traffic crash. When Deputies arrived, they discovered a deceased male in the west bound lanes and a red GMC sport utility vehicle in a wooded area near the roadway. LCSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit responded to the scene and initiated the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Preliminary results from the investigation indicate 32 year old William Powell Jr. was driving a red 1995 GMC Jimmy east on Apalachee Parkway near the intersection of Cap Tram Road.
Powell’s GMC swerved out of control and entered the median. The vehicle began rolling as it crossed into the west bound lanes.
Roberto Falcon, 45, was driving a 2006 Peterbilt truck pulling a vehicle hauler in the west bound lanes of Apalachee Parkway and observed the GMC rolling in to the west bound lanes. Falcon changed lanes to avoid colliding with the GMC and struck Powell who had been ejected. Powell died at the scene.
Preliminary results from an autopsy indicated Powell died from trauma associated with the crash. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is still ongoing and additional information will be made available in the future.
