Lafaye Copeland was sworn in as a Grady County Commissioner Thursday morning.

Copeland is the very first woman to ever have a seat on the Grady County Board of Commissioners.

Her family joined her at the courthouse as she made an oath to serve the community.

Copeland says, "I realized I was the first African American woman, but, I didn't realize I was the first woman until the commissioners told me. So, it really hadn't sank in yet. I'm looking for good things to happen here at the Grady County Board of Commissioners."

Copeland says she's ready to hit the ground running. Her official first day is Wednesday.
