Live Oak, FL - The Suwannee Correctional Institution is under investigation after several inmates at the prison crafted handmade weapons and assaulted five corrections officers Monday.
The Department of Corrections said some of the officers suffered stab wounds and all five were hospitalized. The DOC told us over the phone all five returned to work Tuesday.
The prison is located outside of Live Oak and houses adult men with a maximum capacity of 1505.
Back in April of this year, another correctional officer was stabbed by an inmate at the facility.
With that incident, the DOC said the prisoner attacked the officer with a lock attached to a laundry bag, stabbing him twice in the back. The inmate made the weapon out of fencing.
Similar to that situation, they aren't releasing much about Monday's incident, only saying it happened in the prison's yard.
The DOC also has not released the names of the inmates or correctional officers involved as they continue to investigate.
A DOC spokeswoman said it will be up to the state attorney to determine if more charges are filed against the inmates.
