Tallahassee, Florida- July 12, 2012
Florida Governor Rick Scott has ordered state and national flags to be flown at half-staff Friday.
The order is for Private First Class Steven P. Stevens who was killed in Afghanistan June 22nd.
Governor Scott has ordered that the flags be lowered at City Hall, the Leon County Courthouse, and Florida's Capitol Friday.
Steven Stephens was a Detroit native but relocated to Tallahassee. He attended FAMU on a swimming scholarship for two years before joining the marines in 2009. He deployed to Afghanistan in March, just about a week before his son was born. He never got the chance to see his baby in person. The department of defense said that Stephens was killed while conducting combat operations.
Many friends of Stephens remember him as a "gentle giant," and always knew he wanted to explore the world. He leaves behind his wife and young son.
