Florida Sheriff: 3 Dead After RV Park Standoff

Deerfield Beach, FL (AP) - Authorities say three people are dead and two critically injured after a hostage standoff at a quiet Florida recreational vehicle park.

The Broward Sheriff's Office reports that 41-year-old William De Jesus fatally shot 76-year-old Ovila Plante late Thursday outside the older man's RV at Highland Woods RV Park in Deerfield Beach. De Jesus then barricaded himself inside the RV with his family and the dead man's girlfriend, who eventually escaped.

After a seven-hour standoff, a SWAT team entered the RV early Friday. They found De Jesus and his 9-year-old son dead. De Jesus' wife and 7-year-old son were suffering from stab wounds.

Authorities didn't immediately have a motive for the attack. The De Jesus family was from central Florida. Plante and his girlfriend were on vacation from Quebec, Canada.

Florida Police Say 1 Dead, Gunman With Hostages

Deerfield Beach, FL (AP) - Authorities say a man has been killed and a gunman is in a recreational vehicle with hostages.

Miami television station WTVJ-TV reports that the Broward Sheriff's Office says a man was shot Thursday outside a recreational vehicle at the Highland Woods trailer park in Deerfield Beach.

Police say the suspect was holed up in the vehicle with five people and later two, holding a gun to a woman's head. The station reports that one of the two hostages was able to exit the vehicle and is safe.

Authorities say they have spoken with the gunman but had trouble getting to the person shot because of the gunman's proximity.

A message left for the sheriff's office by The Associated Press was not immediately returned Thursday night.
