Tallahassee, FL (AP) - Some Florida lawmakers want to force online retailers to collect the state's sales taxes.

A Senate committee on Thursday agreed to move a bill (SB 7206) that would require online retailers such as Amazon.com to collect the state's 6 percent sales tax if the retailer has a warehouse or provides commissions to Florida residents who direct customers to the website.

Floridians are supposed to pay taxes for online purchases but there's no way to enforce the law. Other states have tried to go after online retailers but many of those laws are being challenged in court.

The Senate bill -- which could have an uphill battle in the House -- would require the state to hold sales tax holidays to return to taxpayers an amount equal to what's collected online.

Internet sales are taxed if the company you are ordering from has a store ore multiple stores in Florida. Buy anything from Lands End (Owned by Sears) Eddie Bauer or others and you are charged Florida sales tax on the purchase. If the business does not have stores in Florida you are not charged Florida sales tax.

@ Anonymous - If you were a real retailer in Florida that already has to collect sales and use tax, you would know that it is already in the law the retailers who sell outside their own county have to collect all applicable sales tax. They also have to pay tax on any products they buy which are not for resale, like office supplies. You should be better informed. Talk to an honest business owner.

@anon...we should all be taxed at the same rate. Get rid of ALL deductions. Institute a flat 10% tax and be done with it. If governments can't live on 10% then too bad. You can't keep taxing those that make more than you. Government and citizens have to learn to live within their means. You are not entitled to anything. Work hard, do only what you can afford and understand that not everyone gets to live the life of liesure.
