Press Release: Valdosta Police Department
On August 28, 2013, VPD patrol units were dispatched to the 400 block of East Moore Street about two males who were trying to sell a GPS unit. The complainant found this action to be suspicious and notified police.
Police were able to obtain a description of the two males from the complainant and located the two males in the area who fit the description. Due to the area having had several breaking and entering automobiles in the past weeks, this behavior was highly suspicious. Officers located two GPS units on the suspects and various other items. The suspects stories about how they acquired the GPS units did not match, adding to the officer’s suspicions.
Officers used the GPS units to track back to the last address in the system and was able to locate the owners on Alden Avenue and Azalea Drive who both confirmed to have had GPS units stolen from the automobiles.
The two offenders were charged as follows: Terrance Mitchell, 35 year old Valdosta resident, 2 counts of Theft by Receiving Stolen Property, 1 Count of Giving False Name to an Officer, 1 count of Violation of Probation.
Xavier Mark Terrell, 35 year old Valdosta resident was charged with 1 count of Theft By Receiving Stolen Property. Both offenders are being held at the Lowndes County Jail pending further court proceedings. The Valdosta Police Department continues to investigate this case.
Chief Brian Childress stated Patrol Officer Chris Hicks, Officer Phillip Hay, Officer Alyssa Shirey, and Officer Trey Gandy showed excellent diligence and persistence in investigating this complex case. This was an excellent display of teamwork demonstrated by our officers.
