ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. (AP) -- June 23, 2012

A Georgia Air Force base is awarding a $3.7 billion contract to the Boeing Company to handle upgrades of dozens of fighter jets owned by Saudi Arabia.

Officials at Robins Air Force Base say the contract is part of a $29 billion deal in which the U.S. is selling 84 new F-15 fighters to the Saudi air force while it upgrades dozens of older planes.

The contract calls for Boeing to develop conversion kits to upgrade 70 of the Saudi jets, test and evaluate the finished work and familiarize pilots with the changes.

The middle Georgia base was assigned to oversee the upgrades and maintenance of the Saudi fighter jets after the White House announced the deal in December.
