The Thomas County Sheriff's Office says a permit is required to purchase any firework capable of shooting into the air.
Says Capt. Steve Jones, "The non-explosive, the non-aerial [fireworks] -- the ones that don't leave the ground -- it's perfectly legal to sell and use those in Georgia. Our biggest concern on the 4th is accidental fires."
And for good reason.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, more fires are caused in the U.S. on Independence Day than the rest of the year combined.
