Giant Gingerbread House Features 10,000 Hard Candies

Associated Press Release

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- A Savannah hotel chef using 500 pounds of gingerbread has whipped up a home sweet home for the holidays.

The giant gingerbread house that Hyatt Regency Savannah executive chef David Gordon and his kitchen staff built is on display in the lobby of the downtown hotel. The gingerbread house stands 12 feet high and 8 feet wide.

Its construction required a lot more sweet stuff than just gingerbread. Gordon says the house was also built with 500 pounds of powdered sugar, 3,000 egg whites and about 10,000 hard candies.

The gingerbread house isn't just for show. It's used as a place for people to drop-off canned goods for America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia, a charity dedicated to helping feed needy families.
