Tallahassee, FL-November 17, 2012

A group of Tallahassee residents are pushing for state legislation requiring genetically altered foods to be labeled.

Genetically modified foods are foods that are created to display certain characteristics such as disease resistant crops or have added vitamins.

The Food & Water Watch held its 'What's on Your Table' cook-off. The cook-off displayed dishes without genetically modified ingredients to raise awareness.

"It's really important that individuals, communities, cities, states, the country knows what they are eating and what they are putting in their bodies and their family's bodies," says Talya Tavor of the Food & Water Watch.

The FDA says genetically modified foods are safe to eat. Several countries such as Brazil, China, Russia and Japan do require labeling for genetically modified foods.
