Highway 84 Between Quitman and Valdosta Closes Due to Flooding

-- Lowndes County, Ga. -- February 29, 2013 --

As of last night, the department of transportation closed Highway 84 between Valdosta and Quitman. The closure was initiated after the Withlacoochee River began to flood. The section of highway that crosses the river is now completely under water.

Georgia Department of Transportation spokesman Joe Sheffield said "the damage we really will not know until the water begins to recede. Obviously we would like to open it up as quick as we can. We think that it will remain closed all day today which is Friday."

The department of Transportation said if it cannot open the highway later on Friday night than it will do so on Saturday.
