Inmate Dies Awaiting Murder Trial

TAMPA, Florida -- July 1, 2012

A 62-year-old inmate has died after collapsing at a southwest Florida jail where he was awaiting trial for a murder charge.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies said Randall Walton Willis collapsed in the general population housing unit Saturday. He was rushed to the hospital and died eight hours later.

Willis was arrested in March after he called 911 and told the dispatcher he'd shot his terminally ill wife. After his arrest, authorities said he confessed to shooting his wife in the head and chest.

Authorities are investigating his death. It's not clear if Willis had a medical condition. No other details were released.
