Thousands of folks headed to the North Florida Fairgrounds today for one of the biggest back to school giveaways in our area.

Kids getting ready to head back to school Monday were given free backpacks, gently used clothing, haircuts, and health screenings. Jacob Chapel Baptist Church sponsored the back to school event for the eighth year in a row.

The church’s pastor, Jermaine Simmons Sr., said it’s grown over the years and it’s all thanks to the church’s parishioners. He said, "We came to our church members with a challenge. We said we want to serve more people than we served last year. Our members literally gave over $40,000 cash to make this happen."

Pastor Simmons estimates they will help 5,000 people today. Walmart and the City of Tallahassee also sponsored the event.
