Leon County Holiday Closures and Service Changes

Closed Monday, September 1

  • Leon County offices

  • Leon County libraries (main and all branches)

  • Leon County community centers

  • Leon County Solid Waste Management Facility (Apalachee Parkway) and Rural Waste Service Centers

  • Leon County Animal Control

  • Marpan Recycling

  • Waste Pro

Remain Open for the Holidays

  • Leon County Parks and Recreation facilities (parks and boat landings)

The LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System’s main library will close at 6 p.m. on Sunday, August 31.

The Leon County Main Library (downtown) will reopen at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2, and branch libraries will reopen at 11 a.m.

Also, residential waste collection routes will be delayed one day during the week of the holiday. For more information, call the Leon County Solid Waste Management Division at (850) 606-1800.

Gadsden County Holiday Closures and Service Changes

The following holiday closures and service changes will occur September 1, in observance of Labor Day.

Closed Monday, September 1

  • Gadsden County offices

  • Gadsden County libraries (all branches)

  • Gadsden County Animal Control

Open for the Holiday

  • Gadsden County Parks and Recreation facilities (parks and boat landings)

Additional Service Changes

  • All three Gadsden County Public Library branches (Quincy, Havana and Chattahoochee) will be closed Saturday, August 30th.

The City of Tallahassee’s administrative offices will be closed for the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 1. Following are schedule changes for the week of August 31 through September 6 for solid waste customers living inside the Tallahassee city limits, StarMetro and the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center.

Solid Waste Schedule Changes

GARBAGE / RECYCLING / YARD WASTE (red week) / BULKY ITEMS (red week) – during the holiday week, all customers will receive service one day later than their regularly scheduled service:

  • Monday customers - Tuesday, September 2

  • Tuesday customers - Wednesday, September 3

  • Wednesday customers - Thursday, September 4

  • Thursday customers - Friday, September 5

  • Friday customers - Saturday, September 6
  • Garbage and recycling containers should both be rolled to the curb for pickup by 6:30 a.m. on collection day, with both containers returned to the home no later than the day after collection. Customers are reminded to separate yard waste piles from any bulky items set out for pickup.     StarMetro Schedule Changes

    StarMetro, the City's mass transit system, will change its operations for the Labor Day holiday, as follows:

  • FIXED ROUTE SERVICES – On Monday, September 1, StarMetro will operate on a Sunday schedule with no night service.

  • DIAL-A-RIDE SERVICES – Dial-a-Ride services will operate on a Sunday coverage area on Monday, September 1. Non-sponsored trips and Dial-a-Ride trip requests for Tuesday, September 2, must be scheduled before 5 p.m. on Friday, August 29.

    Animal Service Center Closed Monday

    The Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center is normally closed to the public on Mondays, and thus the facility will be closed on September 1. Normal hours will resume on Tuesday, September 2, with the center opening at 10:30 a.m. Customers needing more information, including photos of animals available for adoption, may visit This LINK or contact the Animal Service Center at 891-2950.

    City Animal Control will be available for emergency situations only on September 1 and can be reached via the Consolidated Dispatch Agency at 606-5800.

    The City of Valdosta office will be closed on Monday, Sept. 1, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

    The Sanitation Division will collect residential garbage ONLY on Sept. 1. Citizens should place their green rollouts at the curbside by 5 a.m. on Monday to ensure their garbage is collected. Pick up services for recyclables and yard waste WILL NOT be available on Sept. 1, but will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 2, for both Monday and Tuesday routes.

    As a reminder, all garbage must be bagged, securely tied and properly placed within the garbage bin provided. For more information or to arrange a special pick up for items too large to fit in the garbage bin, contact the Public Works Department at (229) 259-3590.
