TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Rising senior and 2014 USA Softball National Player of the Year Lacey Waldrop participated in the Team USA Selection Camp from June 8-22 but did not make the final roster that was announced today.
Liberty University was host to a five-day camp from June 8-12 as 24 athletes competed in practices, drills and scrimmages to give the coaching staff, led by head coach Ken Eriksen of USF, a chance to see who would be able to make the final 17-member squad.
Team USA transitioned to play six exhibition games over three days, with doubleheaders on June 13 in Lynchburg, Va., June 17 in Findlay, Ohio and June 19 in Purcellville, Va.
Waldrop was named the starter in game one on June 13 and faced the Central Virginia All-Stars. The Chester, Va., native earned the win after pitching 2.0 innings, allowing two unearned runs and recording two strikeouts as Team USA went on to a 10-2 victory.
Waldrop only other appearance came in the final game of the doubleheader on June 19 against the VA All-Stars, tossing 2.1 innings of relief and surrendering one hit, one run, one walk and posting two strikeouts.
Maddie O’Brien was a member of the VA All-Stars team, and the pair of first team All-Americans faced off against each other in the top of the fourth of game two. Waldrop was able to get best of her teammate, inducing a groundout to the circle from the 2014 ACC Player of the Year. O’Brien later ripped an RBI double to center in the sixth inning off Oregon’s Cheridan Hawkins to bring in the only run of the game for the VA All-Stars.
“I could not have had a better experience over the last two weeks while trying out for Team USA,” said Waldrop. “As badly as I wanted to make the team, I am so happy for the girls who will be representing the USA this summer. They are such a talented and amazing group and I hope to be able to play with them again sometime in the future.”
