Lawmakers Work on Specifying How to Give Teacher Raises

As lawmakers debate how to implement Governor Rick Scott's suggestion of pay raises for all Florida teachers, local educators say they'll just be grateful for an increase.

Governor Scott proposed a $2,500 across-the-board pay raise for teachers.

The Florida House plan would give districts $676 million through the state's main funding to use on priorities, which includes pay raises.

The Senate's plan would specify that districts use $480 million for salary increases.

Leon County Superintendent of Schools Jackie Pons says, "Any way that they can find a way to compensate our teachers and to compensate them for what they're doing. They're not only changing lives, they're saving lives. They do a great job. I would certainly support this concept."

The House's budget strongly encourages school districts to base at least half of the teacher pay raises on performance.
