Tallahassee, FL - FAMU Police say housing staff were doing a routine health and safety inspection at Sampson Hall around 11:30 Tuesday morning, when they found a gun in dorm room 125.
Nathan Rivner was arrested and charged.
FAMU student Julien Massey says, "It's a scary though, because you don't know what may happen. Like with the Virginia Tech thing, you didn't know the boy had a gun, but he had one on him. You don't know what may happen. You may tick somebody off one day and the next day, your mama's burying you at the cemetery."
The police report says the gun was found in Rivner's desk; and says the .380 pistol was loaded with a magazine and one round in the chamber.
"I don't feel like you need a gun, especially on a college campus." Says, Massey.
Police say Rivner told them that he had the gun to protect himself and the woman he loves. They say Rivner said he's seen firsthand the violence of the streets.
FAMU student Crystopher Dawson says, "I kind of low-key feel where he was coming from because first semester, people were getting robbed like daily. That's why I feel him that he had his gun. But, we shouldn't have any guns on college campuses."
The police report says Rivner said he never intended on hurting anyone, and he had it only to protect his life.
Rivner is charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds.
