Tallahassee, FL - With the Christmas season upon us, we wanted to take a look at how local businesses are fairing.
We first stopped at "Remember When," a store owned by Karen Loewen of Tallahassee.
"[Sales] are not as good as they were even two or three years ago, but I'm still hoping that by Christmas this year, people will start coming in," Loewen said.
Even though sales are down, she says money still doubles or triples during the holidays and it's a time to have fun.
"I get to see people I don't see but once a year, they come in for Christmas and buy a bunch of stuff from me," she said.
Then we stopped a few doors over to Joe's Bike Shop, which has been around for 26 years.
"It gets busier, it takes them until like the last week or two before Christmas but everyone starts coming out," said Joe Mezzina, owner of Joe's Bike Shop.
In 2011, holiday sales increased 5.6%, according to the National Retail Federation.
On average, holiday sales have increased 3.5% per year for the last 10 years.
There's also ways for businesses to get help this holiday season, especially ones that are new or trying to get started up.
According to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, their mission is "to license efficiently and regulate fairly, and these improvements will make it easier for people to start businesses, get state licenses and get back to work."
"We work as hard as we can. We heard about a restaurant that wanted to open a couple days before Thanksgiving, we were able to get that application processed and get them up and running within 48 hours," said Sandi Poreda, communications director for DBPR.
