Valdosta, GA - "Shop Valdosta" is a program, set forth by The City of Valdosta to encourage local residents to shop within the city limits.

"Being Downtown, we have a lot of local customers and it's nice to see those customers shopping in Valdosta and not online coming to see those businesses they see year round", says Jessica Newman,Owner of City Market.

The City has promoted foot traffic in Valdosta by holding their Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and parade Downtown and also by encouraging local businesses to stay open later during these events.

"We've seen a lot of foot traffic and a lot of new customers which is a good thing and we've also noticed our regulars coming back more often because they have a reason to come downtown instead of just coming Downtown because they thought about it", says Newman.

Does more foot traffic mean the program has been successful? Jamie Pitts, owner of 109 Central says her business has seen a 25 to 30% increase over last year.

"I have been here for 11 years, and you still have people walk in the door and say 'Oh, I didn't know you were down here." I say, 'yea, we have been for a while', so yes, I think they've done a very nice job", says Pitts.

Both of these business owners say they appreciate what The City is doing to encourage shoppers to stay local.

Pitts also says she hopes The City of Valdosta will continue to promote shopping locally throughout the new year.
