Tallahassee FL- Around 250 Potash Corp. employees at the Suwannee River Chemical Complex lost their jobs Tuesday. The lay-offs were all part of Pot-Ash Corporations nationwide consolidation.
They announced this morning that their White Springs Phosphate facility in Hamilton County would be shutting down. When we spoke with officials earlier today they told us that would reduce their operation by about half.
Potash Corp White Springs, Mike Williams explained, "Our hearts are with them this is a challenging time. These decisions were not undertaken lightly, they were difficult but they were necessary decisions in view of the Global phosphate market conditions."
Williams explained the Corporation needed to consolidate to be able to sustain business overall. He also told us all the employees who were laid off today will receive two months compensation to carry them into the new year and then those who able to receive severance will be able to apply in February.
Another 100 employees are expected to lose their jobs by the time they have finalized the shut down of this one facility.
