Tallahassee, FL: Former, current and aspiring community leaders met to discuss the future. Tonight was the launch of the Oasis Center for women's third Women Can Run program, and this year they hope to encourage many many more women to run.

With support, Dorothy Inman-Johnson explained how she won the Tallahassee city commission seat after a two month campaign, "My friends asked me if I would run for that seat".
She isn't the only one who just needed a little nudge from loved ones to get her running.

Florida House of Representative Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda explained, "And then somebody came up to me, my husband, and said; 'You know what? I think you should run for office when the kids leave the nest.' And that is what I did."

The Director for the Oasis Center for Women and Girls, Haley Cutler said, "One of the things that the research shows is that when women run, they don't lose more than men. The issue is, they just don't run as much as men and so we need to get women to throw their hat in the ring."

Using inspirational phrases they are hoping to inspire women to get out and run.

Cutler later explained, "So the big picture goal is we want more women running for office. Ultimately we want it to that end because we want more women in office. And we know the only way to get into office is to run for office."

The Women Can Run Program hopes to provide insight on what it takes to run a campaign, inspiring them to know they can do it.

Vasilinda later said, "Say I can do this and I am the one that can do this, and I think sometimes women are a little reticent. And I think this is a good thing for women to know they should run...That they have gifts and talents to bring."

To put it in perspective there are currently three women on the Leon County Commission and just one female apart of the Tallahassee City Commission.

Leon county is just one of the many counties the Oasis Center hopes to reach through their program.
