Tallahassee, FL - January 6, 2013
The Inaugural Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Dare to Dream” Festival celebrating the life and legacy of the human rights leader and peace activist is scheduled for Noon – 4 pm, January 21st on Kleman Plaza in downtown Tallahassee.
The festival will feature live music, vendors, theatrical performances, dancing, historical exhibits, and a “MLK Birthday Bash” for kids complete with bounce houses, face painting and birthday cake. The free event is open to the public and all ages are invited. Attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the Big Bend Second Harvest of America.
Presented by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Dare to Dream Association, Inc. the event and the Tallahassee Downtown Improvement Authority co-sponsored by the Tallahassee Community Redevelopment Agency and local sponsors. Special guests will pay tribute to Dr. King through live musical performances, theatrical performances, and reflections of the Civil Rights Movement. Children and youth will enjoy the MLK Birthday Bash which will feature games and activities. There will also be a historical exhibit on display.
“Dr. King has been quoted as saying that ‘Faith is taking the first step even when you can't see the whole staircase.’ It is in that spirit that the theme chosen for this year’s festival is Dare to Dream,” Kimberly Menchion, President of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Dare to Dream Association, Inc., says:
“Dr. King’s leadership has inspired generations to live with vision, act on purpose, and work in peace and harmony with our fellow man. This festival will allow the community to gather in fellowship to continue the recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream and inspire others to pursue their own dreams.”
Festivities will begin immediately following the annual Martin Luther King, Jr., memorial march, led by the Tallahassee Chapter of the NAACP. Come out and Celebrate as a community! The festival will kick off at 12:00 pm on January 21st and will run until 4:00 pm. All ages are welcome.
