Tallahassee FL- We are just days away from Christmas Day and that means there will be a lot of last minute shoppers out there trying to find the perfect gift for their loved ones.
With so many options it can be difficult figuring out which toy will not only be fun, but also safe. The Florida Department of Health offered some tips for picking out those specials gifts. The key? Paying attention to the age appropriate labels.
"So you might think of getting a small child a yo-yo but you may want to reconsider because there are all these tiny things that may come out," reasons the owner of local toy store and ice cream parlor, Gregory Cohen says it's important to keep in mind who you are buying for.
"You got to use the same common sense you use in your house," said Cohen.
For some parents like Christopher Scheiderman, father of two young boys, those age labels are really a suggestion.
"So I have to learn my children to find out what would really fit. So basically it's just about knowing what they like," Scheiderman explained.
Aside from using the age appropriate labels as a guideline, the Florida Department of Health suggests: reading all safety labels before purchasing, avoid toys with small items that a small child could choke on, and provide supervision at all times.
That way you can assure your family will have a successful holiday season. For more information on what you should look for when purchasing a toy for a child you can visit: http://www.floridahealth.gov/articles/choose-safe-toys-this-holiday.html
