Suwannee County, FL -- May 8, 2012 --
Many schools across the nation are following the healthy eating message for kids. But, Suwannee Primary School in Live Oak, FL is taking it a step further.
"We hardly don't play when it's time for recess, we just come over here and want to water the plants," said Logan Lloyd, a student at the school.
Bonnie Box, a nutrition teacher with the school, helps these kids grow their own food. Then, they're able to eat it.
"I try to keep nutrition lessons fun and exciting," Box said.
Boxes goal focuses on helping kids understand the importance of good nutrition and healthy choices, which will hopefully stay with them for life.
"I just want children to know that good nutrition is so important," she said.
Most people probably frowned at the idea of eating healthy growing up, but these kids said it's extremely popular at their school.
They plant and grow everything including: 10 hydroponic containers with three types of lettuce and five raised bed gardens with various types of fruits and vegetables.
Inside the raised bed gardens are red potatoes, cucumbers, zucchini squash and plenty more.
Box believes this program helps build kids vocabulary, physical health and positive outlook on eating healthy.
