Lowndes County Budget Approved-- But It Wasn't Easy

Valdosta, GA - The budget has been approved, but the belt is tightening.

The Lowndes County Board of Commissioners voted in a special called meeting Tuesday night. The budget is a little more than $87 million, which is 7% less than last year. That means no money to buy new vehicles or equipment. And no additional jobs are being filled. But the budget is balanced.

"It's an austere budget. It's definately a back to basics philosophy. It's something the staff has been working on since November. It was presented to the commissioners in May. And they have been looking at it and going over it. They're looking for ways to save money and improve efficiencies. And that has all culminated in tonight (Tuesday's vote)," said Paige Dukes, Lowndes County Clerk.

County leaders blame the loss of a special purpose penny tax called SPLOST for the hardship.
