News Release: Maclay Board of Trustees

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I proudly announce the appointment of James M. Milford as Maclay’s next Head of School, effective June 2014. The Board voted unanimously in favor of James and looks forward to welcoming him, his wife Angie and their three boys into the Maclay Community next year.

James has a diverse and distinguished record of service over the past 12 years at Darlington School in Rome, Georgia. He is currently the Associate Headmaster at Darlington where he oversees facilities valued at over $93 million, a $30 million endowment, and a $24 million annual operating budget. Prior to his current position, he has served as the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, Director of Student Life, Director of Residential Life, Head of House, and College Advisor. He has also been an active member of the Darlington faculty teaching junior and senior level technology classes.

James’ passion for educating and influencing the lives of students coupled with his outstanding record of accomplishment makes him an ideal person to transition from Mr. Jablon’s 38 years of exemplary leadership. We are confident that James’ commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and vision of collaboration to work with faculty and administrators that will provide Maclay students with a foundation of success to prepare them for their college and professional careers.

“I am both honored and humbled to be chosen to serve as Maclay School’s next Head of School,” said James. “In every experience I have had with those connected to Maclay, I could feel the passion, love and hope for the school that any Head of School dreams of. Angie and I are excited to join the Maclay family and find ways to deeply connect with the Tallahassee community. We were seeking a school community that values child-centered education, the potential in each child and the importance of the connection between a charismatic adult and the impact it can have on the life of a child. At Maclay, these were ever-present and at all levels of the school. I'm excited to work with the Maclay team to honor the traditions of the past and strive toward the Maclay of the future. We can’t wait to bring our boys to their new school and our new home.”

Over the last four months, the Search Committee under the direction of Board of Trustee Vice-Chair, Rip Kirby, conducted a nationwide search resulting in a select group of highly qualified finalists. Faculty, administrators, students, parents, alumni, and other members of the Maclay Community participated in days of interviews, surveys, and meetings providing the Committee with valuable feedback and opinions ultimately culminating in the selection of James Milford.

James is a graduate of Shorter University and holds a Masters of Business Administration from Berry College. Besides his work in the classroom, he has served on numerous committees and held positions that involved strategic planning, growth in enrollment, development of curriculum, and setting the standards and implementation of teacher evaluation programs. Apart from his experiences and outstanding leadership qualities, James brings a philosophy of community and collaboration for with the common mission to elevate the educational experience for each individual student.

I trust you will join me in welcoming James, Angie, and their boys to Tallahassee. In closing, I want to express my deepest gratitude to the Search Committee, the Board of Trustees, and the many members of the Maclay Community who contributed untold hours in making this search a success. While being grateful for our many past accomplishments, we are most enthusiastic about the future of Maclay School and its continued mission of creating an environment of academic excellence in academics, the arts, athletics, and service in our community.
