CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. (AP) -- A family out scalloping in the Gulf of Mexico spotted a missing fisherman and pulled him to safety.
Tampa television station WTSP reports 51-year-old Efstathios "Steve" Moumouris treaded water for nearly 24 hours after a bad storm tossed him from his boat on Wednesday afternoon. He was not wearing a life jacket.
Todd Hoy and his family had heard about the missing boater when they headed into the Gulf on Thursday. So, they were keeping an eye out for him while scalloping. They spotted him about 7 miles offshore of Crystal River.
Hoy says Moumouris was fairly coherent when they got him on board. They called his wife, who called his rescue a miracle.
He was taken to Seven Rivers Medical Center in Crystal River suffering from dehydration.
