SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) -- A Sarasota judge sentenced a man accused of dousing a puppy with hot sauce to one year in county jail.

On Thursday 47-year-old Ephrian Myles pleaded no contest to animal cruelty charges. Circuit Judge Donna Berlin also ordered him to serve 18 months of probation and to complete an anger management course. She told Myles he is to own a pet or live in a house where there are animals.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports Myles became annoyed with his girlfriend's 3-month-old dachshund-chihuahua mix named Gizmo and poured hot sauce on the dog.

Authorities say the hot sauce got in the dog's eyes and throat. His girlfriend took the puppy to a nearby fire station, where the hot sauce was washed off.

The puppy was treated for neurological problems.

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) -- A Sarasota man faces felony animal cruelty charges after he allegedly poured hot sauce over a 3-month-old puppy.

According to a police report released Sunday, the man's girlfriend took the Dachshund/Chihuahua mix to a nearby fire department for help.

The puppy's eyes were swollen shut and it was having trouble breathing before rescuers washed the hot sauce off and helped to revive it.

The girlfriend told investigators that the puppy, named Gizmo, has history of seizures and that the man became irate when Gizmo started yelping while having a seizure.

Gizmo is expected to make a full recovery.
