NAPLES, Fla. (AP) -- Southwest Florida authorities say a man charged in the slayings of six family members now rejects his legal name and has refused to shower for several weeks.
Mesac Damas faces six charges of first-degree murder. The Collier County Sheriff's Office says Damas has refused all orders from deputies and told them his name was no longer Damas but COG, Child of God.
The Naples Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/1qqYJ2D) Damas has been jailed since his arrest in 2009 in connection with the killings of his wife and five children, who ranged in age from 1 to 9. In the past, Damas has admitted to killing his family, saying "bad spirits" made him do it.
An Aug. 1 court date is scheduled to hear from doctors about Damas' competency to stand trial.
