Meigs, GA -- August 12, 2011 ---

The city thrived from the turn of the 20th century until the 1960s when Highway 19 was built and bypassed it.

Now, its residents hope getting Old Georgia Highway 3, also known as the Dixie Highway, designated as a 'Scenic Bypass' by the Department of Transportation will bring people through again.

Says city Marketing and Economic Development Coordinator Ernest Barfield, "That would help new business be attracted to the area and it would diversify our base -- our tax base -- with tourism and small businesses."

Meigs is the only town left on the Dixie Highway with its original marker.

The historic highway starts in Albany, Georgia, and ends at Flowers Bakery in Thomasville.
