Tallahassee, Fla. -- A local teacher is remembered by her school after being killed in a car accident last week.

Students, parents, faculty and family members of Abby Fishburn gathered to remember the 22-year-old teacher who was killed in a car accident on May 1.

"It was something that our students really wanted to do and it kind of gave them some closure to something that was not expected for them to have to handle," Shane Syfrett, Principal, Deerlake Middle School, said.

A tree dedication ceremony took place in front of Deerlake Middle School to honor the science teacher who was known for her sense of humor and genuine kindness.

"We chose the cherry tree because pink was her favorite color. It will bloom a bright pink bloom every spring which will remind us of her vibrant personality and just her joyous spirit,” Syfrett said.

A memorial service followed in the auditorium, where those who knew Fishburn best talked about how they will remember her.

"One of the hardest things I’ve had to do is show up everyday and walk past her room and not be able to walk in and talk to her in “spanglish” and joke about whatever was going to happen that day or complain about whatever happened the previous day," Gia Maxwell, Teacher, Deerlake Middle School, said.

Sherri Ramsey's 11-year-old daughter was a student in one of Fishburn's classes and says she will always have good memories of her teacher.

"Love, support- it was amazing the impact she had on so many children being so young," Sherri Ramsey, Parent of Deerlake Middle School Student, said.

The school is also offering grief counseling for students and staff.

Tallahassee, FL - Today, students and members of the community remember the life of the local teacher, who was killed in an early morning accident last week.
