Memorial Day in Wakulla County

Wakulla County, FL -- May 28, 2012 --

The ceremony held at the Wakulla County Courthouse proves that while Wakulla County might be small in population, people there are big on pride for their country.

Citizens gathered to join in patriotic songs, prayers, and a laying of the wreath on the memorial.

"Wakulla County is a great place to work, live, and they support their veterans to the utmost," said J.D. Johnson, Veteran's Service Officer in Wakulla County.

"All give some, some give all. So we are here to honor those who gave all," said Ernest Chichester, VFW Post Commander in Crawfordville.

Since 1969, Wakulla County has lost four of their own.

Staff Sergeant Andrews Arthur Lee died in Vietnam in 1969.
Chief Petty Officer Matthew Bourgeois was killed in Afghanistan.
Both Lance Corporal Charles Hanson and Sergeant Javier Garcia died while serving in Iraq.

A recurring message during the event was that while Memorial Day remembers those who gave their lives, we should always honor those who have served our country.

"Wakulla County came out today to remember our veterans, and those that we've lost serving over seas, and we really appreciate everyone's commitment to our country," said Alan Brock, Chairman of the Wakulla County Commissioners.

"I always come back to a quote that General Patton had, and that was, "It's foolish to mourn the dead, but instead, thank God that such a man lived," said Chichester.
