MIAMI (AP) -- Miami is dropping its bid to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention.

Organizers had been putting together a bid to host the event downtown at the AmericanAirlines Arena. But in an email last week to city and county government officials, organizers recommended withdrawing from the process. They claimed there wasn't enough time to put together a winning proposal.

The Miami Herald ( ) reports that the convention was expected to cost local governments $50 million.

Orlando, another of the 14 cities invited to bid, has also dropped out.

Proposals are due Friday.
