Missing Couple Believed To Have Drowned

According to Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office

On Friday, September 27, 2013, after a two day long search for Lake City residents William and Lynda Ward, they were found in the river that borders their Lafayette County property, appearing to have drowned.

Further investigation pending awaiting results of the Medical Examiner. There is no foul play suspected in this case, this is a tragic accident.

It was due to a tireless effort of the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, in assistance with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Dixie County Sheriff’s Office, Duval County Sheriff’s Office, Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office, Judy Thigpen K9 rescue and recovery, Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission and Mayo Correctional Institution that the two were found so quickly. We ask that you keep this family in your thoughts and prayers.

On Wednesday, September 25, 2013, approximately 5:09pm, a family member of Lake City resident William (69) and Lynda (60) Ward called into the Lafayette Sheriff’s Office and reported the two missing. The caller advised that the couple were last seen the morning of the 25th and they were to travel to their river home in Lafayette County and return that same afternoon. Several attempts to contact the couple by friends and family members have proven unsuccessful.

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office responded to the river home in an attempt to make contact with the couple, but they were not located. The couple’s vehicle was located at the river property and the property appears to be secure. Currently, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office is treating this as a missing person’s case, but the investigation is ongoing.

Multiple agencies from surrounding counties are assisting in the investigation and search efforts to include- Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Duval County Sheriff’s Office, Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office, Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, and Mayo Correctional Institution.
