Continuing to make it easier for low income consumers to have access to affordable telephone service, the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) today approved Cox Florida Telecom LP (Cox) as an “eligible telecommunications carrier” in certain Florida rural areas.
Cox will offer Lifeline Assistance (Lifeline) to customers in rural areas of Central Florida and the Gulf Coast. Under the federal Lifeline program, telephone customers who are eligible for certain public assistance programs or whose income meets program criteria can receive a monthly basic telephone service discount of $12.75.
“We are pleased that Cox will begin offering Lifeline to qualified rural Florida customers,” PSC Chairman Ronald A. Brisé said. “For consumers who live in rural areas, where access to community and emergency services is sometimes limited, phone service is a vital resource.”
Recently approved to provide Lifeline in its non-rural Florida service territory, Cox also offers Lifeline to eligible customers in parts of the following states: Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, California, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The nation’s third-largest cable TV company, Cox Communications serves more than six million residences and businesses nationwide.
