New Survey Shows 1 In 5 Workers Spend Thanksgiving On The Job

Tallahassee, FL- Jacob Grozier says he has spent the past three Thanksgivings working and he is not alone. According to a new survey by CareerBuilder, one in five workers in the U.S. planned to spend their Thanksgiving with co-workers in exchange for family time.

The survey showed the lesiure and hospitality industry had the most workers on the clock Thursday with 44%, followed by retail and health care with 31%. Transportation and information technology rounded out the list.

"It's a little depressing, especially being this far away from my family. Obviously I'm a student up here, so not being able to go home got to me a little this morning, so it was a little depressing," said Grozier, an employee at Hotel Duval in Tallahassee.

Some employees say they don't mind putting in the time.

"I mean at least you're making money, that's just how I look at it, you know," explained Humzah Mohyuddin, an employee at Dairy Queen. "I mean there's some holidays I'd like to spend at home, but some of them, like Thanksgiving, we'll probably just eat tonight."

Donovan Spence is also an employee at Hotel Duval. He said, "It's not a bad thing working on the holiday cause at the end of the day it's better to be working than not be working at all. So that's kind of a good thing also, so I'm not complaining about it."

The survey also showed 90% of workers would rather spend Thanksgiving at home with their families, 2% said with their co-workers and the rest said neither.
