-- Lowndes County, Ga. -- February 7, 2013 --

An elite unit of the Air Force called pararescuemen, or PJ's, often are the difference between life and death on the battle field.

One of them said "as long as there's someone out there needing to be saved, we're there to do it."

7 of them, based at Moody Air Force Base, are the stars of a new TV series for National Geographic called Inside Combat Rescue. The show follows them in a recent deployment to Afghanistan. They all have plenty of experience when it comes to being in the hot zone.

Master Sargeant Duane Hayes said "the aircraft was getting shot at, the aircraft was shooting back at the enemy. It's obviously not the funnest thing in the world to go through. Your adrenaline is defintely pumping."

During the squadron's 4 month deployment they rescued 108 lives. Including soldiers, civilians and children. They even rescued members of the Taliban.

Senior Airmen Steven Bryant said "somebody's injured somebody's injured. I don't care who it is. I'm still going to preform to the best of my ability to make sure that they're going to get the best treatment from me and my team."

The National Geographic crew used 40 cameras to film the PJ's on 130 missions.
