Valdosta, GA - Drivers in Valdosta will want to be on the look out for a new traffic signal starting Tuesday.

This is the first day the new street light is active. It's on a very busy portion of St. Augustine Rd next to Starbucks. It's designed to help ease the traffic flow off of Twin St. Construction to build the light and realign the intersection began six months ago.

"The purpose of that traffic signal is to allow motorists along Twin St. and the adjascent businesses there better access onto St. Augustine Rd," said Jim Martinez, Engineering Project Manager.

The $1.3 million project is being paid for entirely by a local sales tax called SPLOST. These funds are from SPLOST Six. Voters did not pass SPLOST Seven in the November election.

City of Valdosta Release: New Signal Light to Assist Traffic at Twin Street Intersection

A new signal light at the intersection of Twin Street and St. Augustine Road has been installed and will go into “flash mode” on Feb. 7 to allow motorists to get used to the new traffic light. During this time, the Twin Street and St. Augustine intersection will be opened to motorists for the first time since construction began six months ago to improve traffic flow in that area of the city.

The signal will go active on Feb. 12. The city’s Engineering Department has posted message boards, facing east and west, to inform the traveling public of the new signal light.
