New Bill Could Change Greyhound Racing in FL

Greyhounds have raced along these tracks at the Jefferson County Kennel Club for over 50 years. But new bills moving through the Florida legislature may change that.

The proposed laws would eliminate the number of races a site is required to have in order for gambling to be allowed there. For instance, a facility with slots must run a minimum of 100 live races each year. It's a change some track owners say they would welcome.

" We would be very happy with it. I think everyone in the state would. So would the little greyhounds, " Steve Andris owner of JCKC.

There are 16 tracks licensed to hold greyhound races in Florida. But only 13 of them currently do. One of those is JCKC here in Monticello.

J-C-K-C has about 300 dogs that race on its track. Should the legislation pass, those dogs could be moved.

"There's greyhound racing all across the country and they would go to different places," says Andris

The bill passed committee in a 6-4 vote Thursday. It will head to the senate floor next.

This bill is going to help suffering greyhounds by getting them out of dog tracks and into the homes of people who care for their wellbeing, not just for the profits they rake in. The state should not be in the business of supporting greyhound breeders to deliver a service that is not desired and does nothing to benefit our state.

If people want to breed greyhounds, then they will continue to breed them.

If it didn't make him money, he wouldn't be doing it. There is a saying that you never see a hearse towing a U-Haul. Steve Andris' might be the first. The welfare of Jefferson county or the people in it never enters his mind unless it benefits him.
